TORONTO, Sept. 18 - Canadian intelligence officials passed false warnings and bad information to American agents about a Muslim Canadian citizen, after which U.S. authorities secretly whisked him to Syria, where he was tortured, a judicial report found Monday.

Such cases are probably all too common in the last several years. Treating all suspects as criminals - as terrorists, with even fewer rights than criminals - and keeping them for years without trial is an affront to freedom that the U.S. should never have caused, much less defended. How can we stomach the human rights abuses our country is performing without apology?
