"Downplaying justice in favor of stability is a losing strategy"

The mistakes made in Afghanistan have been numerous and have compounded, to the point where one wonders what hope there is of bringing about a stable social order there. A recent conference made it clear how seriously the American policy has failed. As one participant put it, “US strategy is incentivizing insecurity.” The conference report is discouraging because it points to errors that will be hard to overcome now, after so many years of policies that fail.
