Everyone in Pakistan knows the kind of popularity MQM enjoys in the largest and most populous part of the country. Throughout 90s PPP and PML govts conducted an operation which resulted in hundreds if not thousands of extrajudicial killings in Karachi, almost in all cases MQM's political workers. Both ANP and PPP has a past in Karachi, a violent one at that which makes MQM reacts violently everytime they try to do a "show of force" on their home turf. PPP reacts in a similar fashion in interior sindh (their home ground) and PML in Lahore. In that one instance both sides came prepared for it. There are scores of pictures that show ANP and PPP workes armed with guns firing and burning vehicals. I dont think it is correct to take such a narrow view of that one episode by ignoring decades old ethinic tension into account.

As far as your take on Chaudry drawing huge crowds, it was not possible at in Karachi. People in Karachi totally support MQM and Musharraf by that token and whoever was in the streets that day doing a rally for CJP was from outside, mainly political workers . I personally like CJP Iftikhar Chaudry and some of what he was doing. But i can definitely tell you lawyers movement and specially it's leader Atizaz Ahsan are the biggest thugs right now.
After beating Arbab Rahim the former CM (and he is not saint for sure), lawyers physically attacked former law minister sher afghan niazi and here is the video of that

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGsK7znSfhE&feature=related

Lawyers have burned public property, attacked vehicals and people in the name of "lawyers movement" through out Pakistan.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05660756030578602060noreply@blogger.com
